Waterhouses, Staffordshire – near Leek in the Peak-Dustrict. My brother Gary and his girlfriend Anna have a house here – a small stone cottage. It was derelict when they bought it and they've spent the last five years renovating. It's not finished but it's looking good – a great achievement because neither of them have any building experience and they've done most of it themselves.
I always feel highly inspired when I talk to him – he's one of the few people I can truly open up to and know I'll be understood. If I ever had doubts about my journey of this time, they wither to dust in our discussions. People ask me why I write and what I write, and I tell them I write as a conversation with myself – talking to Gary is like talking to myself, but a self that has different experiences – fresh experiences that complement and enrich my own.
